Firenze Santa Maria Novella or Stazione di Santa Maria Novella – Firenze SMN is the main national and international train station in Florence, Italy. The Florence Train Station was built in the early 1930’s, but did not follow the architecture of the time instead the station has a modern design. Located in central Florence, the station is a walkable distance away from major attractions such as the Duomo.
It is located in the northwest corner of central Florence. The Pisa Air Terminal is also located within the terminal. The SITA bus station is just to your right if you’ve exited the station and orient yourself facing the Santa Maria Novella church.
High-speed, long-distance trains connect Florence Santa Maria Novella with other Italian and European cities via the the main north south line running from Milan city centre to central Rome Termini (see hotels).
The SMN is a modernist construction, designed by the Gruppo Toscano architects and built between the years of 1932 and 1934, on the footprint of an earlier station layout.
The concourse has a striking modernist look and is fronted by local Pietra Forte stone, designed to contrast with the Gothic architecture of the nearby Santa Maria Novella Church. The station’s interior has a dramatic glass and metal roof, with large skylights flooding the platforms with sunlight.
The railway station also functions as a pedestrian street, linking two parts of the city, another reason for making it the ideal location when you book hotels and other cheap accommodation in the area.
The station is also well located for the city’s trade and exhibition centres.
Whether you choose to stay near the train station, in the centre of the city, further out on one of its many bus routes, or in the beautiful Tuscan countryside, you’ll discover a good choice of luxury accommodation, and including many bargains and cheap deals on hotels, budget friendly hostels and furnished apartments.
