Toulouse is a city on the River Garonne in France, and is renowned for rugby and football. It is often referred to as La Ville Rose, or the Pink City, after the colorful stone used in much of its construction. Toulouse was an important municipal area in Ancient Roman times and has been occupied ever since, with many of today’s streets following their original Roman lay-out.
The center of Toulouse is easy to explore on foot. Stroll around soaking in the French atmosphere of its lively markets and squares, such as the Place de Capitole. Visit the old monastery of Les Augustins, and relax in the attractive gardens of Les Abattoirs Modern Arts gallery. Take a pleasant walk along the River Garonne and Canal du Midi, which flows to the Mediterranean, or take a boat trip from the pier at Daurade.
It is also a world-class center of aviation and home to one of the largest factories in the world, where Boeing Airbus aircraft are assembled. Fascinating guided tours of the complex can be booked. Plenty of well priced accommodation can be found in the city centre.
Rugby and football are obsessions in the city, with the 33,000 seater Stadium Municipal de Toulouse being built in 1937. It was rebuilt when chosen as a venue for the 1998 World Cup. One of Europe’s top Rugby Football Union teams, Stade Toulousain, is based in the Stadium Municipal de Toulouse, so on match days the city is full of excitement, with fans dressed in the football team colors of red, black and white.
Other grounds in Southern France include the Allianz Riviera stadium in Nice, Velodrome in Marseille (home ground of Olympique Marseille), the Olympic Stadium in Lyon and the Geoffroy Guichard stadium in Saint Etienne.
